Children's Day Celebration

Hawaiian Treasures: Hawaiian Quilt Exhibit
June 8 to 11, 2007

Outrigger Reef on the Beach
View outstanding samples of more than 30 Hawaiian quilts created by master island quilt designer John Serrao and his daughter Cissy. Hawaiian women, introduced to quilting by American missionaries, later developed their own unique style.

Today, Hawaiian quilts are treasured by many as collectibles and family heirlooms. Part of Outrigger�s 2007 Heritage Series: demonstrations and presentations by Hawaii�s master artisans as they pass on their traditional knowledge.

King Kamehameha Day

King Kamehameha Day was decreed in 1871 to honor Kamehameha I (1758-1819) who unified the Hawaiian islands and formally established the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1810. In celebration of this state holiday, Outrigger Reef on the Beach will host a special free exhibit of Hawaiian quilts honoring all Hawaiian ali�i (royalty).

Kawehewehe means "Healing Waters" and is the place name of the area in which the Outrigger Reef on the Beach is located. Hawaiian healing and wellness are highlighted in this multi-day series of special activities including hula, chanting, Hawaiian foods, native plants, lomilomi (massage), la�au lapa�au (medicinal plants), and olelo (storytelling).

Na Mea Waiwai

Learn about the making and use of implements valued by ancient Hawaiians, including kapa (used for bedding or clothing), fishtraps and weapons. The presentation is being led by master artisan Umi Kai as part of Outrigger�s 2007 Heritage Series: demonstrations and presentations by Hawaii�s master artisans as they pass on their traditional knowledge.
